Review: Kiko Milano Water eyeshadow

Hello,

Being pretty busy with another projects took its toll: it’s been ages since I blogged. I would like to thank anyone who is still keeping up with Makeupolitan, you’re awesome :)

Let’s move on, start fresh and have a talk about some nice Italian makeup. 😀

Recently I placed my first order at KIKO.

KIKO Milano is an Italian professional cosmetics brand offering a wide range of beauty products and promising high quality at affordable prices.  Their statement regarding animal testing made me glad:

KIKO does not carry out or order testing on animals, pursuant to the relative European laws. This guarantee does not only include finished products but also the latest generation raw materials, tested from 2004 onwards.

All the items came carefully packaged after about 20 days. Packaging reminded me a little of MAC cosmetics – simple black cardboard boxes with white letters – elegant and efficient.

Today’s post is about KIKO Milano Water eyeshadow.

I wanted to try their Water eyeshadow since I read many positive reviews about it. This paraben free product comes in 32 shades, all of which can be used wet and dry. Their finish is luminous and satin, no mattes here :)

I chose shade 218, Grapefruit pink. It looks like a perfect blend of pink, gold and orange.

Notice the 3D structure of the eyeshadow, it makes a cool detail and reminds me of waves (the whole water story, I guess :D).

The color is very pretty; not a color you’ll see everywhere in eyeshadow palettes, but still not that crazy and eccentric so you couldn’t wear it on a regular day. :)

Here comes the swatch:

The color itself is multi-dimensional: it changes with the angle it hits the light at. The brightest swatch on the right is the eyeshadow applied wet.

For wetting the eyeshadow you can use water or different mixing liquids (e.g. KIKO mixing liquid,  Inglot Duraline, MAC Fix + or any other fixing spray). It makes the color more vivid and bold. I simply used water and really like how it turns out. :)

Water eyeshadow is nicely pigmented, blendable and longlasting. Also, it doesn’t emphasize any lid texture or uneveness you may have, which also makes it a really nice product to use on mature skin.
Wearing tip: You can wear it alone as a light wash of color all over the lid and gently blended into the crease or combined with darker shades in the outer corner for more drama. The orangey tone in it really makes blue and green eyes pop :)

I give this eyeshadow a big like and can easily see myself trying rest of the shades in the future 😀

Did you try any of the KIKO Milano products? If yes, how did you like it? Also, what are your favorite eyeshadows for wet and dry use? :)

Drugstore Gem: Catrice cosmetics – Velvet Matt Eyeshadow

Hi :)

Eyeshadow lovers know how hard it is to find good matte eyeshadows at affordable prices. German drugstore brand Catrice cosmetics did a great job with these – Velvet Matt eyeshadows are loaded with pigment, extremely soft and buttery, and cost only a fraction of high end eyeshadows price.

Catrice Velvet Matt eyeshadow

Catrice Velvet Matt eyeshadow

Here’s what Catrice says about them on their webpage:

The Velvet Matt Eyeshadows with a new premium texture contain ultra-soft shimmer pigments for a velvety matt finish. Thanks to the silky, highly pigmented formula, the Velvet Matt Eyeshadows practically melt with your skin to create a radiant look.

Indeed, these are silky and among the softest eyeshadows I’ve ever tried. Their texture is excellent. Only downside to it is that you have to be extra careful not to drop them on the floor, because they will crush into million tiny pieces. 😀

There are 6 available shades: Vanillaty Fair (nude vanilla), Pink-Up girls (pastel baby pink), Jump up and brown (warm yellowish brown), Al Burgundy (deep burgundy), Welcome to Greysland (light to midtone grey), Moss wanted colour (greenish grey).

I have two of them – Vanillaty Fair is great for inner corner of the eye and brow highlight, and Pink-Up Girls can look great when applied on whole lid – that kind of eye look, paired with thick black eyeliner, reminds me a bit of 60s mod looks. :)

Give these a try, you might be pleasantly surprised! :)

Sleek Cosmetics: True Colour Lipsticks (hand and lip swatches)

Although I believe Sleek cosmetics  is most known for their I – DIVINE eyeshadow palettes, their other products also deserve more attention.

All of the Sleek products that I’ve tried (eyeshadows, blushes and lipsticks) are very pigmented and have wide shade range.

True Colour lipsticks are available in 30 shades and two finishes: matte and sheen. Packaging is nice, minimalistic and sleek (:D). It contains 3.5g/1.2oz of lipstick.

These products are not tested on animals, which I’m very happy to hear. :)

What Sleek claims about their lipsticks:

“Get high impact lips with True Colour Lipstick in a gorgeous matte and sheen finishes in a variety of shades that are highly pigmented, and conditioning to keep lips soft and supple. Enriched with vitamin E helping to hydrate and protect the lips. Comfortable to wear and glides on with ease this is the must have to awaken your makeup look.”

I agree with everything except from one thing: Matte shades are on the dry side and can be a bit uncomfortable on the lips and you can feel tugging when putting on one. On the other side, it makes them last longer than sheen finish shades.

Here is the list of ingredients:

Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Polybutene, Isononyl Isononanoate, Polyethylene, Caprylic/capric triglyceride, Diisostearyl Malate, Microcrystalline wax, Beeswax, Simmondsiachinensis (Jojoba) seed Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Mica, Titanium dioxide, D&C Red No. 6, D&C Red No. 7, D&C Red No. 27, Iron Oxide Yellow, Iron Oxide Red, Iron Oxide Black, FD&C Blue No. 1, CI 77019, CI 77891, CI 15850, CI 45410, CI 77492, CI 77491, CI 77499, CI 42090.

Currently I own four shades: Heartbreaker (matte), Mystic (matte), Barely there (sheen) and Smother (sheen).

Here are the swatches:

The shade Heartbreaker reminds me a bit of MAC Impassioned. Description on the website says:

Heartbreaker is a matte bright coral pink, team with sunkissed shades from the Sunset i-Divine palette for a stunning look day or night.

This shade is bright and very pretty. I love to wear it in spring and summer. However, make sure to condition your lips before wearing as it can emphasize dry parts and uneven lip texture. Also, as it’s a matte finish, do not expect this to glide on the lips smoothly and easily :) It’s not as dry as MAC cosmetics lipsticks with retro matte finish, but it’s a bit drier than their matte finish lipsticks. It left a stain on my lips and faded out evenly, thumbs up for that. 😀

If you like this shade but don’t like matte lipsticks, I recommend you shade Candy Cane. It looks very, very similar to this one, but has a sheen finish instead. :)

Mystic is an interesting pink-purple matte shade. Texture and formula is like the previous one. In comparison, this lipstick looks like a lovechild of MAC Up the Amp and MAC Heroine sprinkled with pink. Just look at the swatch and you’ll get what I mean. 😀

Description on Sleek website:

Mystic is a matte bright purple-pink that looks great with glowing skin. Apply Luminous Pressed Powder all over your face, add subtle cat eye flicks across your top lash line to finish.

Barely there is a peachy nude shade. It glides on your lips easily, feels moisturizing and leaves a subtle sheen. For me it would be better if it was more nude, and less peachy, but I guess I’ll have to go for shades like Bare it all or Liqueur.

Description on Sleek website:

Barely There is a sheen nude peach, team with shades from the Au Naturel palette for a muted look or go for bold with Blush by 3 in Pumpkin on cheeks.

Smother

This is a real autumnal, vampy shade.  With its sheen finish and plummy, berry colour Smother reminds me a lot of MAC Rebel. It glides effortlessly on lips but you should use it with lip liner to prevent bleeding.

Description on Sleek website:

Smoulder is a sheen deep berry red; keep the rest of your makeup simple when you’re sporting a lipstick as dark as this. Apply Crème To Powder foundation for an even natural base and several layers of Eye Drama mascara.

This time I put MAC Rebel on lower lip and Sleek Smother on upper lip to show you how similar they look on lips. When swatched on the hand, they don’t look the same, but when on the lips it’s really hard to tell which is which.

I like these lipsticks and I’m looking forward to get a hold on few more shades. :) Did you try any of Sleek True Colour lipsticks? Which one did you like best? :)

Nail polish of the week: China Glaze – Spontaneous

Hello :)

I accidentally realized that I’m writing about purple makeup all the time. I didn’t mean to, seriously. This purple phase just happened, there’s nothing I can do :)

Spontaneous is a beautiful medium purple creme polish. The colour is on the cooler side.  It has great formula and applies really smoothly and nicely. Two coats are enough to achieve opacity and rich colour.

It’s a kind of purple which doesn’t scream “Look at me!”, but makes your nails stand out anyway.

This nail polish is a part of China Glaze Core collection, so you can find it easily in stores. Bottle contains 14ml of DBP, Toluene and added Formaldehyde free nail polish. This rich purple shade looks fun and flattering on my fair skin with yellow undertones. I loved it!

LOTD: Her purple majesty – MAC Heroine

Hi guys!

A few weeks ago we finally got the first MAC Cosmetics store here in Croatia. The store is beautiful, big and spacious and said to be the biggest one in South-East Europe. Store opened in the heart of Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Beauty addicts and lovers from all across Croatia keep visiting and enjoying the new store, so it’s pretty crowded all the time. All the employees are very helpful and kind so customers can really enjoy their time there.

As I could only browse zillions of swatches online until now, and merely imagine how a particular shade of lipstick, foundation or blush would look on me, this made me very excited and happy. It still seems a bit unreal. 😀

I began composing my MAC wishlist long ago and, as time went by, I just kept adding new stuff to it. You can imagine how hard it was to decide what to get first. I opted for a lipstick and, as I wanted something pretty unique, I chose Heroine. By the way, every makeup lover’s first time in MAC is impossible to forget, do you agree?

As it says on MAC Cosmetics’ official website, Heroine is a matte, bright purple lipstick. The colour payoff is amazing, staying power as well. Although matte, it’s not uncomfortable on lips. Scent is typical for MAC lipsticks, subtle vanilla-esque, nothing too much. Heroine is really loud, vibrant, unusual and attention seeking shade, just as I like it :)

Seems a bit tricky to incorporate into a simple makeup look, eh?

Not really, I had great fun with it. :)

For eyebrows, I used Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip brow pomade in Soft Brown.

Products used on lips: Nyx Slim lip liner in Purple Rain, MAC lipstick in Heroine. In the end I played a little and added Kryolan Purple/Lila lipstick over the top.

Products used on face: Revlon Colorstay Foundation in Buff, Catrice Camouflage cream in Ivory and Light Beige, Rimmel Stay Matte pressed powder, Nars blush in Orgasm, Anastasia Beverly Hills contouring powder in Fawn.

Essence Colour & Go Nail polish: 193 Best Dressed

Hi!

When in drugstore, I always stop by Essence cosmetics‘ counter and take a look at their nail polish section. I own many nail polishes by this brand and I’ll keep buying them because I have no objections to their quality.

Colour range is great, and they often add new beautiful trendy colours and finishes to the collection. I think everyone could find a colour for themselves. With majority of Essence’s nail polishes, you’ll need 2 coats of polish to get complete colour opacity, without your nails showing through, but some of them (darker and intensive colours mostly) need only 1 coat.

Most Essence Colour & Go nail polishes have high shine finish, very good longevity (although, I always use base coat and top coat when doing my nails so it’s individual) and really affordable price  (cca 1,5€)  for the 8 ml bottle.

This time, while browsing Essence’s counter, I stopped by a beautiful dark purple polish infused with dark magenta/violet microglitter. Purple lovers, watch out! You’ll hardly resist it.

I couldn’t, and that’s the story how Essence Colour & Go 193 Best Dressed nail polish came home with me.

Essence Colour & Go - 193 Best Dressed nail polish

Essence Colour & Go – 193 Best Dressed

It’s quite hard to capture what it looks like on nails because the colour changes according to how glitter catches the light. However, it is a vampy, gothic dark purple shade, and microglitter makes it look lit from within. Very pretty. This is how it looks like in shadow and in direct sunlight.

Give it a look in person if you can! Also, give me your recommendations for purple nail polishes, please :)

MAC Viva Glam I lipstick

Hi!

Red lipsticks are my thing. I’ve loved them since I started wearing makeup. I’ve never been a nude lipstick type of girl.

I have always preferred deep reds to corals and bright reds. Although I have about 15 red lipsticks in my collection, I am always in search for THE ONE.

I’ve been searching through MAC’s great choice of red lipsticks and I had a hard time deciding which one to choose. My favourites were MAC Dubonnet (Amplified Creme finish), MAC Diva (Matte finish), MAC Russian Red (Matte finish) and MAC Viva Glam I. I decided to go for MAC Viva Glam I.

I got it as a birthday gift yesterday and I fell in love with it at first swatch and lip application. It is an opaque, highly saturated with colour, true deep red lipstick, matte and with great staying power but not drying. Everything I asked for and more. I see myself wearing it often. See it for yourselves on swatch :)

vivaglam1IMG_1205And this is how it looks live. I paired it with neutral eyes (UD Naked Basics), Sleek Suede blush and Mary Lou Manizer. This lipstick just speaks for itself..and it’s pretty eloquent, I tell you! 😀

MUR Colour Chaos Look – Soft Burgundy

Hi,
I challenged myself to do a wearable and not too crazy look with the craziest palette that I own, Makeup Revolution Salvation palette Colour Chaos.

I combined shades Needed to, Ammunition, My demons, Me Three, and added a tiny bit of Beyond Real in upper crease. For inner corner and brow bone highlight, and inner part of upper eyelid as well, I used Catrice Velvet Matt eyeshadow in Vanillaty Fair. Pretty happy how it turned out! This colour combo especially enhances green eyes and makes them stand out :)

theBalm: Bahama mama – Bronzer, shadow & contour powder

Dear readers,
Today I’ll review one of the latest additions to my makeup collection, theBalm’s Bahama Mama – bronzer, shadow & contour powder.

I’m always in search for that one perfect contouring product for fair skin. My current favourite is Nyx powder blush in Taupe. It’s hard to find products that perfectly mimic natural shadows on face, without dreaded orange or too warm undertones (nothing wrong with bronzers, to be clear, but the two “skin darkening”  makeup products’ purpose should be clearly distinguished).

I admit not being a particular fan of praised and famous Kim Kardashian’s contouring routine. In my opinion, it can be done in a more simple and subtle manner. However, enhancing facial bone structure really amplifies regular makeup and assists to achieve that ultimate perfected, sculpted, made up face which brings to mind editorial and haute couture looks. But, always remember: Moderation, not exxageration (it can be a dealbreaker 😉 ).
